In this Wellcome Trust blog, medical anthropologist Sharon Abramowitz discusses how anthropologists can and should be involved in epidemic response scenarios. An expert on West Africa at the University of Florida, Abramowitz argues that anthropologists are often brought into the discussion at the implementation stage of a humanitarian or research programme whereas they should be consulted from the very beginning of an outbreak scenario. She also points to the importance of valuing local health practices and traditions and listening to local healers who are likely to have deep understanding of how disease and health responses may impact their communities.
